SHL Celebrates Success
SHL Celebrates Success Of Top Legislative Priority
Missouri's 10 Silver Haired Legislature delegations are thanking their state legislators for approving one of the group's top legislative priority for 2007. The Missouri Legislature has approved the creation of a coordinated point of entry for senior services, making it easier for older adults and their families to access services.
The delegates chose these priorities during their annual session in Jefferson City in October. They worked with state legislators to get the bills introduced and passed in the Legislature.
Other priorities of SHL for 2007, which were not acted on in the 2007 session:
- Increase funding for all meal programs coordinated by Missouri's area agencies on aging
-
They are vital to the health of older adults recovering from illness or surgery.
-
Without home-delivered meals, many of these seniors would face hospitalization or nursing home placement.
-
In many cases, the state must pay for hospital or nursing home care for these frail seniors.
-
It is more cost-effective to provide meals to keep seniors out of institutions.
-
State funding for meals programs has not increased in five years, while expenses and the number of seniors have steadily increased.
-
Establish new restrictions on predatory lending and payday loan operations
-
Increase transportation options across Missouri
-
Raise the asset limit for Medicaid eligibility from $999 to $2500
The Silver Haired Legislature is a group of elected volunteers who advocate for Missouri's seniors and their families.
